It is no coincidence that serious accidents involving uninsured motorists are on the rise. This dangerous situation is now being fueled by vague and misguided policies which eliminates vehicle impounds for unlicensed and uninsured motorists. The Los Angeles Times reported that vehicle impounds have dropped a whopping 39% in 2012 and there does not seem to be any let up in sight. Los Angeles police chief Charlie Beck and city commissioners viewed the former 30-day impound policy as a “fairness issue” and essentially allow illegal, unlicensed and uninsured drivers to immediately retrieve their vehicles without showing proof of a license or of insurance. Situations have arisen in the most egregious of circumstances after an illegal, unlicensed and uninsured have actually killed others on the road. Under current policies, that driver can retrieve the vehicle essentially the next day and be out on the road again.
Although Chief Beck and city leaders are trying to implement a policy which is a reaction to the state refusing to license illegal immigrants, that policy is becoming a major public safety issue on Southern California roadways. Moreover, the policy has the unwanted effect of imposing a lesser penalty on other Californians who have had the misfortune of having a suspended license or who are unable to demonstrate proof of insurance.
Imagine your family and friends on the road with drivers who have never even taken a driving test and may have already killed someone in a crash! Opinions about an improper immigration fall by the wayside. Los Angeles Uninsured Motorist Attorney Barry P. Goldberg is a strong advocate of licensing illegal immigrants and enforcing the safety and driving laws strictly. The issuance of a license does not have to lead to legal citizenship.
As an Uninsured Motorist Attorney and advocate, Mr. Goldberg urges his clients, friends and neighbors to obtain sufficient Uninsured Motorist Coverage to protect them. It is just a matter of time until they are in an accident and there is a high likelihood that the “at fault” driver will be uninsured.
