When a cyclist comes to me after a bike accident involving a car one of the questions I always ask is “do you have an auto insurance policy and what is your UIM coverage?”
In my 30 plus years handling bicycle accidents, I am always surprised that most bicyclists were not aware that they are COVERED under their own automobile policy when they are injured in a bicycle accident. In fact, the uninsured motorist portion of the auto policy provides valuable protection against both uninsured motorists and underinsured motorists!
