Motorcycle accidents are all too common in the San Fernando Valley. Whether its riders coming to or from the windy canyon roads or those using their bikes as an opportunity to avoid some of the 101’s notoriously heavy traffic, more and more motorcyclists are on the roads. And more and more of these riders are getting seriously injured, through no fault of their own, in serious motorcycle crashes. If you or a loved one was injured in a motorcycle crash in Woodland Hills or the surrounding area, know that there are experienced motorcycle accident attorneys on your side.
In an attempt to reduce some of these accident-related injuries (many of them fatal), the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) has introduced a “Contract for Safety” tool for riders. The goal is to foster “communication between prospective motorcyclists and their friends and family members about a safe way forward to motorcycling.” The contract is available for free download on the organization’s website, msf-usa.org.
Safety Elements in the Contract
While many motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers of cars, trucks, and other vehicles, there are certain safety steps that riders can take in order to minimize their risk of being involved in an automobile accident. For these riders, avoiding accidents requires that they not only be aware of the risks they face in traffic, but also how to efficiently reduce those risks.
The contrac
t is one between the rider and a closer family member or friend. Alongside the accountability partner, the motorcyclist will review each of the key elements known to contribute to safety, initial each of those safety elements as they go through the list, and both parties will sign the contract.
The safety elements covered by MSF’s contract include:
- Awareness of the risks associated with motorcycling.
- Proper, training, licensing and insurance.
- Wearing protective gear (i.e. a well-fitted helmet, leather jacket, long pants and boots).
- Selecting an appropriately sized and powered motorcycle.
- Maintaining the speed limit and riding with reasonable care.
- Not riding a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
- Keeping the motorcycle in good working condition.
- Being a lifelong learner.
The Power of Prevention
As we shared above, many motorcycle accidents end in a fatality. Indeed, in 2013, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of all traffic accident deaths. Proper safety can be key the difference between life or death for these riders: the NHTSA estimates that helmets saved 1,630 motorcyclists’ lives in 2013 and that over 700 more could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn helmets.
